New Music - Blonde Redhead - 23
Welcome to yet another new feature here on The Futurist. “New Music” will be a more in-depth look at something newly added to the WOXY rotation. Today I hand the wheel over to Mike for his analysis on the new Blonde Redhead album, “23.”
There can’t be too many bands as exotic as Blonde Redhead. They formed when Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace met Japanese art student Kazu Makino (and one other, who exited after one album) in New York in 1993. They eventually came to the attention of Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, who released their first two records on his own Smells Like label. After releasing three records for Touch & Go, they moved to the 4AD label in time to release what many have called their best work to date, 2004’s Misery Is A Butterfly.
Now comes 23, their seventh full-length record, and it continues to highlight Kazu’s wispy, otherworld-like vocals floating atop the trio’s art-rock canvas. Blonde Redhead is on tour in North America through May 12th, and an extensive European tour begins in Manchester, England on May 24th. Key tracks include: “23″, “Spring And By Summer Fall”, “Top Ranking”.
