Today we welcome Joseph Arthur back to the lounge for a session with his new band, The Lonely Astronauts. Joseph has visited us before, playing a session back in 2004. Joseph and his new band just released the first of two albums spawned from some marathon recording sessions, titled, Let’s Just Be. The album has more than 80 minutes of music and even boasts a 20 minute song! For the new album Arthur has employed a “back to basics” feel with the recording and the sound has a heavy Rolling Stones influence throughout, especially the first single, “Diamond Ring.”
We are looking forward to Joseph’s return to the lounge today, be sure to listen in at around 3pm EST to check out the session.
Check out this video of Joseph from a couple weeks ago performing his new song, “Diamond Ring”, on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
I’m happy to announce the winnners of our most recent giveaway for the Headlight Tour EP which feaures 3 songs from their WOXY lounge session. When we announced the giveaway on the blog we asked you to leave a thoughtful comment and found these three to be the most well thought out.

I remember seeing Headlights for the first time, it was right after the bears NFC championship in Dekalb and my brother called me and forced me to buy at least one drink for the band. I was completey hammered and covered in snow by the time I reached the house cafe and only had a vauge idea what the Headlights sounded like, but i thought im drunk and the bears won, so nothing can bring me down. I didnt expect the Headlights to kick so much ass and be such nice people.
Rock and roll.
Mike -
I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know these fantastic people through the music scene in Champaign, IL. I’ve seen them around 15 times, and they are constantly improving and growing as musicians and genuinely down-to-earth people!
One of the best bands around, hands down!
Go Headlights, Go!
Predot Listener -
Any band that puts a few lounge act songs on its EP is all right with me. It’s nice to see acts that are equally as interested in supporting the station as the station is in supporting them.
Thanks everyone! I will be emailing you with prize claim instructions!
The Rumble Strips were one of many UK bands that we feel have a very bright future who stopped in to EAR studios for a session with us during SXSW. The quartet is currently signed to Island Records (UK) and their debut full length is expected out this summer. The session with us was also their American radio debut!
It’s Song Of The Week time again, and this may just be the best batch yet……enjoy!
Mike Taylor - Working For A Nuclear Free City - “Rocket”, from the EP Rocket
Sometimes, it happens to even us here at WOXY.com: we miss a new release. Despite a 7.8 score from Pitchfork, the self-titled debut from Manchester’s Working For A Nuclear Free City never crossed our desks upon its release by the UK indie Melodic last October. The band have quickly followed that up with a new 4-song EP Rocket that, while still available as an import, you can get via digital download services like iTunes and eMusic domestically.
The title track from the EP is awash with swirling dreampop-like guitar work and mixed with a flourish of electronic touches that you might find on a Beta Band record. The song ends with a big crescendo that leaves you wanting more. Definitely a song that will have me ordering their debut disc ASAP. Keep your eyes & ears on this band….

Matt Shiv - Patrick Wolf - “The Magic Position”, from the CD The Magic Position.
The time for another ambiguous, multi-instrumentalist pop star has been long overdue. While it is likely that Patrick Wolf will only flirt with mainstream success here in the states, his 3rd album has already produced 3
terrific singles in the UK and is getting critical raves stateside in advance of its May 1st domestic release.
Building on the more experimental nature of his first two albums, “The Magic Position” marries Patrick’s eclectic instrumentation and classically-influenced songwriting with a poppier sheen. While it is still early in the year, the title track from this new record is a forerunner for best single of 2007.
Joe Long - Maximo Park - “My Velocity”, from the CD Our Earthly Pleasures.
The first single off the second full length from Newcastle’s Maximo Park was an easy choice for SOTW for me. After a few listens I was reminded how much I loved “Apply Some Pressure”, from their 2005 debut. And despite how much I enjoyed that song, this track actually could be the best song I have heard from the band. The quintet manages to pack every ounce of energy into the the three minutes and twenty seconds of sound. The urgency of the simmering keyboards drive the tune but it’s the incredibly catchy chorus from Paul Smith that won me over. Check out the video for “My Velocity.”

New Music today focuses in on the solo debut album from Vandaveer, Grace & Speed.
While it’s the first solo record for Mark Charles Heidinger, he is no stranger to recording as he also fronts the indie rock band The Apparitions. This record was a chance for Mark play some acoustic bedroom folk and take a step away from the sugary pop of The Apparitions. The Washington D.C. based (via Kentucky) singer/songwriter takes the risk of wearing such prolific influences on his sleeve as Dylan and Waits and is able to escape with his own identity intact.
In addition to hearing us play the new album, you can catch Mark performing a live Lounge session for us on May 1st as well.
The Willowz will be pit stopping in our lounge today for a session while out on the road supporting their latest album, Chautauqua. It is the third album from the 4-piece from Anaheim, California and their first release for the Dim Mak label. The band has a sound that pulls heavily from 60’s and 70’s rock, punk and soul. Check in later this morning at around noon eastern time for a lounge session with The Willowz.
While it has been a whole month since SXSW wrapped up, we are still churning out the recap posts for you here on The Futurist. Today we focus on Winterpills, a band out of the Boston area that released their debut self titled disc back in 2005. The new album was released earlier this year and the precise and haunting melodies caught our attention at WOXY.
The two songs below that you can download can also be found on the new Winterpills album, The Light Divides which is now in stores.
