“Gentlemen”’s my fave, by far. The recurring themes, Dulli at his most lecherous, fantastic production, and a guest vocal by the amazing Marcy Mays. Can’t beat it.

favorite Afghan Whigs album - ‘Gentlemen’
why - that album hit when I was in high school in Dayton and I just thought it was something so much more than the ‘regular’ music most of my friends were in to. ‘Debonair’ continues to be one of my favorite songs ever!

1965, cause it stands the test of time, listenable in this decade or any other.

BLACK LOVE- Although Gentlemen is one of the best, this album’s deep moodiness is heard clearly through Dulli’s finest passion among all the albums.

While I would agree with “Gentlemen” as being the definitive Whigs album (it takes me back to junior high & high school), “1965″ is my favorite just because of the memories of spinning it on student radio during my first year of college. Plus, it came out a day before my birthday that year!

It’s a tough call but I listen to 1965 the most, and that makes it my de facto favorite. I plays through as an album really well, and it has it all: bright and dark songs.

Uptown Avondale, simply for the track “The Rebirth of Cool.” Granted, I learned the official album name well after hearing the song. There was a time before I new who the Afghan Whigs were, and was just a 20-something simpleton listening to the FM dial (tuned into 97.7, I believe) and loved, no wait.. lived for when “that song” was spun on the airwaves.
I pretty much consider that song a part of WOXY’s DNA and cannot hear it without thinking of this station, then and now. For that reason, I nominate Uptown Avondale.

This is a tough one, but I have to go with “Black Love”. So many many good songs on that one, plus it’s the first time I’d heard the band (I heard Honky’s Ladder and was blown away!).
Man, the Whigs were such a goooood band, both on record and especially live!

My favorite Whigs album has to be Black Love. First of all, it is the album that introduced me to the greatness of The Afghan Whigs. And secondly, it has probably the best opening track (Crime Scene Part One) and the best closing track (Faded) of any album I’ve ever listened to. It’s an absolute classic!

Here is another vote for Black Love. For me it’s the most solid, the deep cuts are every bit as good as the singles if not better. My favorite songs are Summer’s Kiss, My Enemy, Double Day and Going to Town.

When I moved to cincy in ‘95-96 to go to UC, Black Love was just coming out — it was my intro to the Whigs courtesy (believe it or not) of WEBN. Saw them at bogart’s right before I went back home for the summer and pretty much went crazy for the band right then and there. Went home for the summer and annoyed the crap out of DJs at the station there requesting me some Whigs.

1965 - i worked at a record store when 1965 came out. we played that album in the store at least once a day, if not more.

Gentlemen…. no wait.. Uptown Avondale, er, no, Gentlemen.
It has to be Uptown Avodale. ‘Rebirth of the Cool’ reeled me back into the 97X fold after I landed back in Cinci.

I have to agree that Gentleman is the ultimate classic, but reading this thread has made me realize that tonight I have to give Congregation another listen.

Black Love because there is not a bad song on it, the cover album photo creates a great mood, and Faded is one of the best songs Dulli has ever written!

1965
gentlemen defined the whigs
1965 perfected them

Black Love for me too. Faded and Crime Scene are two of my favorite Whigs songs, so killer bookends, but the whole CD is solid.

1965, no contest. This album forever renders me nostalgic for the not so distant past- the kind of nostalgia that can be brandished as a weapon. Each song is directly linked to past nights out, and “Somethn’ Hot” will always lead off my essential “going-out to booze up and riot” compilation.

Gentlemen, because when I put it on in college it made chicks want to do it. By the time Marcy Mays laid out My Curse it was good to go.

It’s a close call between Gentlemen and 1965, but I think Gentlemen would win out for me. I first heard the whigs on WOXY when they played the song “Debonair’ and immediately purchased the record. Gentlemen is an album I consistently return to and never lets me down.
