This trio from Denver, Colorado really gained our attention late last year when they released their “Dangling Modifier” EP. They’ve made quite a name for themselves on the Denver music scene and we’ve invited them to play our stage during the Monolith Music Festival later this fall out at Red Rocks.
They stopped into the Lounge after playing the popular Girls & Boys party here in town. During this session they played 2 tracks from the EP and also premiere 2 brand new tracks (available for download below) that will appear on their next full-length album.
Another Bonnaroo interview today, this time featuring our friends from The National. Bryan and Scott sat down with me and talked a bit more about Boxer. We invited Matt in a bit later and all chatted about the Bengals, and old WOXY memories…..Enjoy!
New Music focuses on something just added to the WOXY.com playlist. Today the spotlight is on the new album from Pharoahe Monch, Desire.
2nd full length album from the Queens born MC but the first since 1999’s Internal Affairs.
Monch’s sophomore release was held up due to the Rawkus/Geffen label debacle.
Desire includes collaborations with Erykah Badu, Dwele, and Tower Of Power and also has a cover of Public Enemy’s “Welcome To The Terrordome.”
Here are a few reviewers quotes about the new album.
“Monch combines several skill sets into a seamless package: A vivid narrative imagination and the control to bring it to life, a knack for dizzying extended metaphors and haymaker punchlines, and a complex moral sense.” - Pitchfork
Chris and John of the Decemberists sat down with me during Bonnaroo. They played off each other really well and it ended up being a great little chat. We discuss the band’s major label debut, The Crane Wife, as well as some solo projects both of the guys are exploring….
It is quickly becoming an annual tradition to have Forget Cassettes into the lounge for a session here at WOXY.com. This will be the third trip into the our studio for the band, the first was in August of 2005 and then in August of 2006. The band has had some changes since we last saw them and is now back to a duo featuring Beth and Doni. Be sure to check in today at 4pm eastern for what promises to be another great session with them. If you need to play catch up, here are the two previous Forget Cassettes Lounge Acts.
The forthcoming 5-song EP from the YYY is a slight return to the sound of their earliest releases. What I’ve heard of it is darker, grittier, and a bit less inviting than the sunny-in-comparison Show Your Bones and frankly, that’s how I prefer my Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Have a look at the video for the tune and decide for yourself.
The members of Canadian collective Broken Social Scene have too much talent to restrict themselves just to one musical endeavor. Following in the footsteps of Feist and Jason Collett, another BSSer is giving us a solo release this fall. If this first taste of “Spirit If…” is any indication, fans of the band will have no trouble getting comfortable with his efforts.
When you load up Kevin’s website right now, you get footage of him eating a bowl of cereal and watching porn. Perhaps that’s all he has left to do when everybody he meets is just “too beautiful to fuck.” His already soft voice becomes almost a whisper when he hits that repeated line in the chorus, as if it is a secret or something he knows shouldn’t really be shared. Instead of seeming crass, it instead comes off as tender and truly genuine. I can’t stop playing this one on repeat and look forward to the album’s release in September.
Joe Long - The Magic Numbers - “Take A Chance”, from the CD Those The Brokes.
Sometimes I hear a pop song for the first time and it instantly smacks me around. That was exactly the case with this one from The Magic Numbers. While their album, Those The Brokes, has been available on import for nearly a year, it finally sees a proper US release next week from Astralwerks Records. This song has that instant pop hook that I will bet you enjoy right away if you are ever a victim of such songs. Check out the video for it below.
We got word here this morning that yesterday afternoon that the US Court of Appeals in Washington D.C. denied webcasters’ emergency motion for a stay of the new royalty rates set to crush the Internet broadcasting industry. This means that now the rates will officially go into effect this Sunday, July 15th, and many webcasters are facing retroactive royalty bills of tens of thousands of dollars (millions for the big guys).
First things first – CALL YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES TODAY! Urge them to support the “Internet Radio Equality Act.” If they’ve already co-sponsored, thank them and tell them to fight to bring it to the floor for an immediate vote. Even if you’ve already called, call again. If the line is busy, call back. This is our last good chance to make some noise about this before lots (and I mean LOTS) of Internet radio operations go silent.
Where will it go from here? What happens on July 16th? Hard to tell at this point. Webcasters really have three options: cough up the piles of cash required to keep broadcasting and the tens or hundreds of thousands that they owe in back royalties (not an option for most webcasters); not pay and keep broadcasting (which will put you legally in violation of US Copyright Law); or shut it down (which still doesn’t relieve you of paying the thousands of dollars in retroactive royalties back to January 1, 2006). It’s a difficult choice to be sure. While the fight to overturn the royalty rates will surely continue after July 15th, I think the majority of small webcasters will be unwilling to take the financial and legal risk of staying on-the-air and will simply go silent.
We’ll post more updates here at The Futurist as we get em. Also some great resources for the latest news on the situation are KurtHanson.com, SaveNetRadio.org, and for a more in-depth legal analysis check out David Oxenford’s excellent Broadcast Law Blog.
Alot of you know I am a big Wilco fan, so it was obviously a thrill to be able to sit down and chat with guitarist Nels Cline. It happened out of the blue as I saw Nels walking by and recognized him. I ran up to say hello and tell him I was a fan and all that good stuff. I mentioned that we were trying to get Jeff or someone from the band to sit down and talk with us for a minute and he just blurted out, “well, talk to me now.” Of course, I could not resist so we talked for one of our longer interviews (still under 10 min). Check it out below…..
