Monolith 2007 Recap - Forget Cassettes

fc-1.jpg

The second band to perform on our stage Saturday afternoon was Forget Cassettes. It’s been very interesting to watch the evolution of this Nashville-based band over the last few years. The original members (Beth & Doni) are back together again and they are joined by their new bass player Jason during this performance.

2007 has found their second album, Salt, picked up for release in the UK and Japan. With more people discovering their music, they’ve continued to put on an impressive live show that probably confuses a few people but amazes the rest of the crowd. Their songs often start soft and delicate and then slowly build up into loud and, sometimes, very intense tracks. They like to play with that dynamic, almost teasing the audience into wondering when the songs will shift.

Their performance at Monolith was outstanding and continued to prove that no matter how many times the lineup changes, Beth is a frontwoman to be reckoned with. Their set included a few new tracks (one of them, “Ribbons”, was premiered recently in our Cincinnati studios) and even a rousing cover of PJ Harvey’s “Me-Jane” which they started working into their live sets recently.

Monolith 2007 Recap - Via Audio

viaaudio2.jpg

Our first day at Monolith was a blast, but we were wiped out by the end of it. After getting a good night’s sleep and a quick breakfast, we headed back to Red Rocks on Saturday morning ready to get the second day going.

We hadn’t seen Via Audio since they dropped in to EAR Studios with us down in Austin at SXSW earlier in the year. Since that time, the band signed with the SideCho label and were getting ready to release their debut full-length record Say Something Say Something Say Something.

viaaudio3.jpg

It can be daunting to be the first band to take the stage, but as soon as the band launched into their set, people started to pour into the room to check them out. I can guarantee that they walked away from the afternoon with some new fans.

They were really fun to watch on stage with loads of energy. There was a magic moment during their performance that just blew me away. That happened when they broke into “Enunciation” from their new album. It’s a nice jazzy number that really highlights the range of Jessica’s voice. You can download that song below, along with some other great moments from the band’s Monolith set.

Lounge Act Recap - The National

Hometown boys The National have been touring pretty much nonstop since the release of Boxer earlier this Spring. When they hit town over the weekend for a performance at the Madison Theatre, we got Matt and Aaron to drop by for a stripped down set.

In the interview, Shiv talks to the guys about their travels and the process of recording the new album. You’ll hear 2 songs from “Boxer” in the performance as well as a b-side that originally surfaced on the “Lit Up” single.

Monolith 2007 Recap - Mobius Band

mobius1.jpg

When we showed up at Monolith, it had been almost two years since we had seen the guys from Mobius Band. They did a Lounge Act session for us at the tail end of September 2005 after they had released their excellent debut record “The Loving Sounds Of Static.”

We liked that album so much that when it came time to start creating a lineup for Monolith, we wanted to try and hook up with them again because we knew they we going to have a new album coming out. All of those conversations also led to us partnering up with the band to help sponsor their upcoming fall tour.

mobius2.jpg

When they took the stage at Monolith, they tore through a 40-minute set that featured some of our old favorites along with some new tracks off their 2nd album “Heaven” (which hits stores next week).

Below you will find a video interview that Shiv did with the band after their set along with a few free downloads from the Monolith stage.

Monolith Hangover Winners!

A big thanks to everyone who left all the great hangover tips in our post about having hangover.jpgMonolith Hangover last week. Not only were they helpful but it sorta made us want to go out and get trashed with the promise of no hangovers thanks to all the advice from everyone. We do have to choose just two though as winners of the new CD from Editors - An End Has A Start. And here they are….along with the prescribed cure of course.

Crystal provides a very medical sounding cure, but I buy it…..

Hangover Cure That Works…

Sleep in (a cool climate is best, but not always available as in you are camping).

When you get up:

B-12 500 mcg

Folic Acid 400 - 800 mcg

1 - 2 Mucinex D tablets (have to sign for them in Ohio)

1 - 2 Bufferin or Ibuprofin tablets

Water or Iced Tea - Don’t suck down a whole bunch at once; sip slowly but often

You’ll be ready for the new day’s first beer before you know it !

And I like how Greg puts alot of thought into his explanation, lots of good thoughts here as well….

Not necessarily in this order;
1. Lots of water (preferably before you go to bed but also the day after).
2. Some greasy sustenance (some the night before doesn’t hurt either (assuming you kept it down)).
3. High dosage of your preferred pain reliever at the prescribed intervals until cured.
4. Get rid of whomever is around (whether a temporary guest from the night before or someone more permanent). For a little while you are going to be a sniveling, disgusting, and shameful wreck that no one will want to see with an acute distaste for everything and everyone–so clear the area.
4. Long hot, steamy shower (as soon as you are able to get up walk without plummeting back to the floor).
5. Moan.
6. Groan.
7. Some woxy vintage (on a very low volume!). (You can exchange this for some bad cable TV or PBS documentary if desired).
8. Swear you will never drink that much again (this step is often debated regarding its effectiveness, but inevitably is always called upon by the victim, so just assume it will be part of the recovery process).
9. Call your friends as you begin to feel better to see when the next party is starting?
10. Repeat.

Thanks everyone!

Monolith 2007 Recap - Ra Ra Riot

rara2.jpg

I think that we’ll always have a special connection to Ra Ra Riot here at WOXY. After all, before the folks at lala.com stepped in to save us, they were the last Lounge Act session that we thought we were ever going to have. After playing songs from a demo EP, they stopped into the Lounge in September of 2006.

A year later, a lot has changed for us and for the young band. Earlier this summer they visited our Cincinnati-based studios about a month after the tragic death of their drummer John Pike. They walked into Monolith with a brand new drummer (19-year-old Cameron Wisch) and they absolutely packed the room for the WOXY.COM stage.

Monolith brought them out to Colorado for the first time and and there is no question that their set was a highlight of the festival. Playing off the fervor of the crowd and, perhaps, more than a little influenced by the high altitude, the band’s set even included both of the 2 Kate Bush covers (”Suspended In Gaffa” and “Hounds Of Love”) that have become live favorites over the last year.

rara3.jpg

Ra Ra Riot are currently playing live dates across the U.S. with Editors. They will then head to England, where they just signed to V2 Records, to continue the Editors tour overseas. Once touring is completed, the band will head back into the studio and are hoping for a Spring 2008 release for a full-length album. We wish them all the best and look forward to many more Lounge Acts to come!
