It’s New On Nothing But New

Every now and then I like to highlight new additions to our hour of new music, which is at 6pm eastern time everyday on WOXY.com. It is one of my favorite hours of the day and while I know some folks would rather hear familiar stuff all the time, some of our more adventurous listeners are dedicated NBN fans.

Below is a listing of new songs we have been spinning on the program, with mp3 links when available.

West Indian Girl - To Die In L.A.
Aloha - Body Buzz (via Stereogum)
Nada Surf - See These Bones (via Stereogum)
White Williams - New Violence
The Whip - Divebomb
Bon Iver - Skinny Love
British Sea Power - Down On The Ground
The Duke Spirit - Lasso
Magik Markers - Taste

And of course, this is just a sampling of the new goodness on the program, be sure to tune in today at 6pm.

The Go! Team Proof Of Youth CD Winners!

Time to announce the winners of our Go! Team Proof Of Youth CD Giveaway. Here are our 5 winners, with their winning comments as well. Congratulations to our winners, and stick around because another giveaway is just around the corner…..

Harriet -

“Junior Kickstart” is my personal theme song and I spread the gospel of The Go! Team on every mix CD I make for friends. I sadly missed their show at the Double Door in Chicago last weekend because of prior travel plans, so I would love to have the chance to submerge myself in the gloriously retro, unpredictable, and wholly invigorating sounds of their newest album.

Brendan -

Whenever I’m at work, half-heartedly crunching away at some boring project I’d rather not being doing, and I hear “Flashlight Fight” come on, my mind is magically transported away to a world of old kung-fu movies that somehow involve Chuck D backed up by a crazy 80s-tracksuit clad street-crew of assorted b-boys, bombers, and other hip-hop stereotypes, while a plethora of samurai and cyborg ninjas do battle all around. This is a MUCH better place to be than the boring office, and if I had the CD, I could choose when I got to be whisked away to this wonderful land of beats, ninja fights and other badassness.

Dan -

I work in radio. It’s a station in a small market where they never send us cool CDs. And as you know, being in radio pretty much means I’m broke. So getting a free CD would be really sweet. Plus nobody ever gives me anything which is really sending me into a downward spiral of introspection, and the world doesn’t really need more of that. Begging, guilt, I’ve got it goin’ on.

Matt-

I live in a Des Moines suburb where there are no decent record stores, the only place to even start to find some indie CD’s is at Half Price Books, and who knows where those people found those CD’s. There is no way that there is a Double Disc version of Proof Of Youth in this city.

Annie -

I just saw the Go! Team at Double Door in Chicago last Saturday night! Fantastic show and I’m still reeling from it. I first heard the band on WOXY.com… I listen all day, every day at work and every once in a while a great song will catch my attention and I will check the playlist to see who’s piqued my interest… every Go! Team song has done that for me. I don’t have the album because I’m on a tight, tight budget, but now that I’ve seen them live, I want to listen non-stop. Please award me the new album… plllleeeeeaaaaaaase!!! :)

Congratulations to all our winners!

The Futurist Song Of The Week - Featuring You

Hopefully you guys are a fan of our Song Of The Week feature here on The Futurist. Mike, Shiv and myself, and an occasional guest have given our choices for the majority of the past three months. And now, we want to give you a chance to become a Futurist contributor. All we need is your choice for song of the week, with a short write up (usually one paragraph or so) and a link to one of the following things…..

1. A legal MP3 provided by the band or the bands label
2. A You Tube video of the song
3. A link to streaming audio of the song that we can link to.

Also, please keep your choice to something that is relatively new.

So, do your write up and send it to me, joe at woxy dot com. On Friday of this week, I will post a few of them here on The Futurist.

I look forward to your choices!

The Futurist Song Of The Week For October 12th

After a bit of a hiatus, Song Of The Week returns to The Futurist this week, even though Mike is absent and out of town. Take a peek at a choice by Shiv and Joe and please feel free to leave your choices in the comments……

Thanks

shivthumb.jpg Matt Shiv - Robert Pollard - “Rud Fins” from the CD Coast To Coast Carpet Of Love

Even though I was never what you could call a hardcore fan of GBV, I’ve always had an affinity for the music of Robert Pollard. I think that part of it comes from growing up in Dayton, but mostly it is because the man knows how to write some well-crafted tunes. Sometimes you have to wade through 6 songs that don’t even hit 2 minutes in length to get to them, but they are always in there somewhere.

This week, Bob released two separate albums on the same day from Merge Records. If you manage to somehow keep up with his musical output, you’ll know that this doesn’t even reflect half of the material that Bob will have recorded and released through various means before the year ends. I’ve never paid much attention to the myriad of smaller releases he embarks on, but I must admit to being pleasantly surprised after getting through Coast To Coast Carpet Of Love.

His song titles still appear like they’re plucked randomly out of a hat or a hazy late night game of Mad Libs, but ‘Coast’ contains some terrific little gems like this.

joethumb2.jpg Joe Long - Working For A Nuclear Free City, “Troubled Son” from the CD Businessmen & Ghosts

This song from WFANFC is actually from their debut album, but it never saw a release here in the states back then. It is however a part of the double disc US debut from the band, Businessmen & Ghosts. The set takes tunes from their debut full length, the Rocket EP and includes a bunch of new songs as well for what is one of the best debut’s this year. The band combine strong dance beats with distorted vocals that in the end, simply rock. I can easily say that if you enjoy this song, the album is something you should look into.

Take a look and listen to this song, Troubled Son, which can be found on the Businessmen disc of the 2 CD set from the band, the video also was the runner up at the Manchester Film Festival in 2005.

Monolith 2007 Recap - Au Revoir Simone

aurev1.jpg
We’ve got one last recap from the WOXY.com stage at the Monolith Festival to give you today. As darkness fell on the 2nd night of the festival, we were treated to a performance from Au Revoir Simone. The trio of lovely ladies from Brooklyn have almost as tricky of a setup as White Rabbits did. You see, they all sing and perform from behind a wall of keyboards and assorted samplers. Getting all of those things running in perfect harmony can be difficult, especially when doing a show after recently returning from overseas. One of the small snafus for the band was when Heather realized that she had an outlet for European voltage on one of her machines.

aurev2.jpg

It didn’t take long for things to get sorted out and they played a terrific set. Their live set has gotten even better since I saw them last, which makes sense because they’ve been touring incessantly to support their album The Bird Of Music. In fact, shortly before arriving at Red Rocks, they were invited by Air to open up dates this fall across Europe.

Below you’ll find 2 downloads from their live set at Monolith and also a video interview that Shiv recorded after their set with Erika and Annie.
