Lounge Act Flashback - Jason Lytle Of Grandaddy

jason1.jpg

Taking you back to May of 2006 today as we caught up with Jason Lytle of Grandaddy as the band was doing their swan song tour, which really just consisted of Jason doing a handful of solo shows. Here are the notes and tunes from that session….

The final Grandaddy album, Just Like The Fambly Cat, just hit stores from V2 Records. Jason came through the tri-state over the weekend to perform at a benefit show and he stayed in town a little bit longer to do an acoustic session in the Lounge. Along with a terrific performance, Jason talked to Barb about the challenges of playing solo and moving to Montana.

Lounge Act Recap - The Forms

forms1.jpg
This Brooklyn-based band did a stripped down set during CMJ at their Gothamist House performance, but they were fully plugged in when they stopped in to our Lounge.

On the road celebrating the recent release of their 2nd full-length album, you’ll hear four live cuts from the cd. The guys also talk about working with Steve Albini, touring in the “iVan”, and contributing to Stereogum’s recent online tribute to R.E.M.’s “Automatic For The People.”

CMJ 2007 Recap Podcast #2

The Thursday of CMJ week was the second day of our live broadcasts from the Gothamist House @ White Rabbit. I was a panelist during CMJ and that was taking place on Thursday afternoon, so I had to miss the first few bands of the day. I was disappointed by this because The 200710gothhouseposter.jpgMuggabears were one of the groups I was very excited to have on the lineup. Their recent “Night Choreography” EP is terrific and I wanted to see them live.

I had to miss them, along with the other first few bands of the day while I was over at NYU participating on my panel and presenting a quick award during CMJ College Day. I missed a bit of excitement as well, as I guess that The Teeth were a bit of a handful during their performance (Gothamist recapped that particular event already)

I finally got back to the White Rabbit in time to see The Big Sleep, who totally kicked my ass. They started off their set with a bunch of new tunes and you’ll hear them all in this podcast. Cincy’s Bad Veins (who made a lot of new fans while they were in NYC) also sounded terrific and they were followed by Georgia rockers Dead Confederate. Those guys did not mess
around. Not only did they truly bring the rock on stage, they also brought their own lighting rig and fog machine.

Sam Champion’s performance was a real highlight for me. A lot of fans came to check out their set, which was actually a stripped down performance. They played some of their new tunes and clearly had a good time. Unfortunately, due to quite a few technical issues with the recording of their set, I only have one song to include in the podcast, but it’s a new one!

GOTHAMIST HOUSE @ CMJ 2007 — Thursday, October 18th

The Muggabears “Dead Kid Kicks”, “The Goth Tarts”
The Jealous Girlfriends “The Pink Wig To My Salieri”, “Carry Me”
The Big Sleep “Sleep Forever”, “Little Sister”, “So Long”
Bad Veins “Falling Tide”, “Fake Baby”
Dead Confederate “Is It A Rose”, “Wrecking Ball”, “Tortured Artist Saint”
Sam Champion “Direct”

Lounge Act Flashback - Editors

editors1.jpg
We are taking the Wayback Lounge Act machine all the way back to April of 2006 for this post, of course pre-dating The Futurist. Here are the notes from the session from Editors……

“Tom and Chris from Editors came in for an acoustic session when they were in town with Stellastarr* and Mobius Band. Here you can grab 2 acoustic versions of tracks from their debut cd “The Back Room.” Please note: the guys also did a cover of “Road To Nowhere” from the Talking Heads, but we are unable to legally include that in the podcast.”

Lounge Act Recap - Arizona

arizona1.jpg
We first met Arizona when they were on the road supporting “Welcome Back Dear Children.” The guys were wrapping up a tour when they stopped into our Lounge the last time.

For their second appearance in the Lounge, the band were meeting up and getting ready to launch a new phase of touring. Earlier this year they self-released an EP called “Fameseeker and the Mono.”

This session features 2 tracks from that EP, the title track to their 2005 EP for “The Sun and the Room”, and begins with a brand new song!

My So-Called Life Box Set Giveaway

When “My So-Called Life” premiered on ABC in the fall of 1994, I was a freshman at collegesocalled12.jpg and, shockingly, not watching much television. I had heard about the show, but didn’t catch it until I was home for the holidays that year and my younger sister urged me to watch it with her one night.

Looking back on the show now, it’s hard to believe that it ever made it to network television. None of the major broadcast networks cared about younger viewers at the time and they certainly didn’t know how to market to them. Executive Producers Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick had recently come off of the success of “thirtysomething”, which allowed them to bring this project to ABC and finally get it aired, even though the pilot was filmed a full year before it hit the airwaves in August of ‘94.

My So-Called Life” may not have pulled in record-breaking ratings, but in just 19 episodes it brought one of the most honest and heartfelt looks at American teenage life ever written into homes across the country. Even though it didn’t last, you have to give ABC credit for having the balls to let the show explore and confront themes including teenage alcoholism, homosexuality, and school violence in prime time.

Like many others, I didn’t really get a chance to see the entire series until it began to run nonstop on MTV. Looking back, you can see how a show like MSCL (for better or worse) tapped into the MTV audience much stronger than ABC’s and it changed the nature of programming on that channel forever.

This new 6-DVD box set collects all 19 episodes along with a wealth of bonus materials, including episode commentaries from members of the cast with creator and head writer Winnie Holzman. Winnie also sits down for a one-on-one interview with Claire Danes on the set’s bonus disc. Damn near every member of the cast also participates in the extra interviews and retrospectives that appear here…all of them except Jared Leto anyway (who is apparently too busy being a major douchebag to recognize that his career would be nowhere without his role as ‘Jordan Catalano!).

It’s also important to note that all of the original music that appeared in the show (which plays as a who’s-who of modern rock radio at the time) is intact on the dvd. That means you’ll hear from the likes of The Afghan Whigs, Juliana Hatfield, Sonic Youth, Buffalo Tom, The Lemonheads, Jawbox, and Bettie Serveert among others while revisiting the show.

Check out a great preview of the Box Set in this fan video…..

We’ve got FIVE copies of the MSCL box to giveaway this week thanks to our friends at Shout! Factory. You have until midnight on Sunday, November 25th to register and we’ll announce our winners on November 26th.

To enter, just send an e-mail to:

Lounge Act Recap - Avec

avec1.jpg
It was a long time coming to finally get Avec into the studio. We really enjoyed their debut record (2005’s If I Breathe, I Fall Asleep) and caught up with them while they were out touring to support their 2nd full-length release called Lines.

Hailing from Baltimore, MD, this 4-piece band balances some truly blistering riffs, strong melodies, and a pair of vocals being split between Shawna Potter and Brooks Harlan.

Lines was produced by J. Robbins and is available now from Civil Defense League, the label formed by Sparta’s Jim Ward.
