We have invites to the new Lala beta site

As you likely know, we’ve been in cahoots with the folks over at Lala.com for some time now, and they’ve been hard at work on a new beta site that focuses on music listening and exploration. It’s definitely worth checking out, and we have some invites to check out the beta for those who are interested.

In a nutshell, the new Lala beta allows you to browse their growing catalog and listen to any song full-length. The first listen is free and you can then add the song to your online collection for 10 cents to get unlimited listening (the first 50 songs are gratis). You can also buy (cheap) CDs or MP3 versions if you’re into that, and even quickly add your existing MP3s to your online collection for free. Yup, all from a standard web browser which means you can access your online collection from anywhere.

They’re still building out the catalog and have been adding a ton of new albums every day plus expect a huge new influx of music from indie labels in the weeks to come. Just as an example, right now you can listen to the new albums from Elbow, The Kills, Gnarls Barkley, The Black Keys and many others.

To snag a beta invite, shoot an email to bryan@woxy.com with the following info:

1) Your name
2) Your email address
3) Are you a current Lala user?

Lounge Act Recap - Cursive

As a longtime staple of the Saddle Creek roster, Omaha may always be where Cursive’s heart is. In the past few years, the band members have actually scattered across the country. Lead singer Tim Kasher (who also plays in The Good Life) has been trying his luck in Los Angeles and is writing screenplays when he’s not making music.

It’s been two years since Cursive unleashed Happy Hollow and now they are in the process of recording again. In this session, they play two tracks that will likely end up on the next album, although they tell Mike that they’ve written about 25 songs and only 8 or 9 are in serious consideration thus far.

We were very fortunate to host the band in the Lounge while they were on a brief Midwestern tour to road test some of this new material.

Lounge Act Video Recap - Okkervil River

It was a big thrill having Okkervil River into the lounge last week. Will Sheff played three of the four songs solo acoustic for us during their session and our friend Kevin of Soft City Lights did a great job capturing this stripped down version of “A Hand To Take Hold Of The Scene” from their most recent album, The Stage Names.

Enjoy the video below, and a download of the session as well…..

Lounge Act Recap - Sons & Daughters SXSW 2008

I’m just guessing that the warmest summers in Scotland are still no match for Texas heat, even on an mid-March day. By the time Glasgow’s Sons & Daughters arrived on Friday morning, the mercury was well on its way north of 90 and the band was feeling it: singer Adele Bethel donning a large floppy hat that matched her black and white dress. Fortunately, the quartet proved they could generate a little heat of their own inside EAR Studios with a set of music from their third CD, This Gift.

The pixielike Bethel and drummer David Gow formed Sons & Daughters after both served in the now-defunct Arab Strap, her strong vocals alongside guitarist Scott Paterson creating a formidable frontline while Gow teams with the cooly detached (aren’t all the best bass players?) Ailidh Lennon for a beast of a rhythm section. Since then, they’ve toured Europe, Australia and the US a few times, once as openers for fellow Scots Franz Ferdinand. Their latest headlining tour brought them to SXSW for a number of appearances and we were thrilled to have them in. In the interview, Adele talks about the inspiration behind This Gift, while Scott tries out his best Morrissey imitation. It’s one of our best from the week.
