Ra Ra Riot have spent damn near all of 2008 thus far on the road here in the U.S. They joined us in the Lounge back in late January for an extended Lounge Act session that included quite a few new tunes. Since that time, they played about 105 times during SXSW this year, hit the road with The Cribs, and now are finishing up a fairly lengthy North American tour with The Little Ones.
For those of you on the west coast who want to see Ra Ra Riot play live, this is going to be your last chance until the fall. The band are going to take a little bit of time off for the summer to rest before their debut full-length album comes out later this year. The next major tour for the band will likely be in September, but if you live in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, or Los Angeles you don’t have to wait that long.
We have 1 pair of tickets to giveaway to see Ra Ra Riot w/ The Little Ones in each of those four cities next week!
MONDAY MAY 12th — Seattle, WA @ Chop Suey
TUESDAY MAY 13th — Portland, OR @ Towne Lounge
WEDNESDAY MAY 14th — San Francisco, CA @ Café Du Nord
THURSDAY MAY 15th — Los Angeles, CA @ The Troubadour
All you have to do to win is send an e-mail to: woxycontests@gmail.com
Your subject line should contain the city you’d like to win tickets for.
Example: Ra Ra Riot - SAN FRANCISCO
Please include your full name in the body of the e-mail so that we can pass it along to the band for their guestlist if you win. We will select our winners for all 4 cities by 12 Noon Pacific Time on Monday, May 12th. You will be notified via e-mail if you win and will be placed on the Ra Ra Riot guestlist for the show. It’s that easy!
We’re big fans of the Canadian rockers TOKYO POLICE CLUB. We really liked their all too brief 2006 EP A Lesson In Crime, but I think it’s safe to say we fell in love last year when they released the single for “Your English Is Good.” That song was embedded in our brains for months and luckily the guys have seen fit to include it on their full-length debut. Elephant Shell which is hitting stores next week and is the band’s first release for the Saddle Creek label.
We’ve gotten our hands on a couple copies of the first pressing of the cd to giveaway here on The Futurist. This is a special 2-disc package that features a bonus EP featuring remixes from DNTEL, Los Campesinos!, Flowers Forever, The Good Life, and Field Music!
If you’d like to win, just send an e-mail with TOKYO POLICE CLUB in the subject line to: woxycontests @ gmail.com
Please include your name and an address you’d like us to mail the cd to if you win. We’ll draw our winners randomly on Friday, April 25th and get them out in the mail to 3 lucky Futurist readers. Good luck!
I’m pretty certain we still have alot of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain fans out there that would love to get their hands on this one. We have some copies of About A Son, the new documentary, to give away here on The Futurist. But first, a bit about the film, and since I have yet to see it myself, I found this description helpful……
Following in the deeply idiosyncratic footsteps of Last Days, About a Son plays more like autobiography than documentary. Gus Van Sant’s feature extrapolates moments from the life of Kurt Cobain (with Michael Pitt as a musician named Blake), while A.J. Schnack’s non-fiction film adheres closer to the facts, but advances a more radical Koyaanisqatsi-like approach. First off, Cobain supplies the narration, but the filmmaker avoids pictures of the alternative icon until the end. (He culled the voice-over from interviews conducted by author Michael Azerrad for Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana.) Beyond-the-grave narration isn’t a new concept–see Tupac: Resurrection–but Schnack (Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns) ups the ante by excluding talking heads, concert footage, and other staples of the genre. Instead, he uses still and time-lapse photography to explore Cobain’s Northwest, i.e. Aberdeen, Olympia, and Seattle. The artist’s unguarded reflections create a sense of intimacy as specific locations illustrate his words. Conversely, the lack of portraiture and self-penned music generates a feeling of absence. The soundtrack combines an ambient score from producer Steve Fisk and Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard with Cobain favorites, like David Bowie, Cheap Trick, and the Vaselines (available on a separate CD). For more specifics, interested parties can always turn to tomes by Azerrad, Gina Arnold, Charles R. Cross, and Everett True. About a Son doesn’t presume to provide a definitive portrait, but Schnack’s rigorous avoidance of convention results in an experience far more dream-like than depressing. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
In addition, here is the trailer for the film.
To win a copy of this DVD, give a short description of your feelings when you heard of Cobain’s death. I know many of us remember it well.
Good luck!

Congratulations to our three winners of the Life Of Brian DVD Giveaway. You all provided excellent quotes from the film, but in the end, we could only choose three. Here are our winnners along with their quotes…..

-Listen. I’m only telling the truth. You have got a very big nose
-Hey. Your nose is going to be three foot wide across your face by the time I’ve finished with you!
-Well, who hit yours, then? Goliath’s big brother?

Ex-Leper: Okay, sir, my final offer: half a shekel for an old ex-leper?
Brian: Did you say “ex-leper”?
Ex-Leper: That’s right, sir, 16 years behind a veil and proud of it, sir.
Brian: Well, what happened?
Ex-Leper: Oh, cured, sir.
Brian: Cured?
Ex-Leper: Yes sir, bloody miracle, sir. Bless you!
Brian: Who cured you?
Ex-Leper: Jesus did, sir. I was hopping along, minding my own business, all of a sudden, up he comes, cures me! One minute I’m a leper with a trade, next minute my livelihood’s gone. Not so much as a by-your-leave! “You’re cured, mate.” Bloody do-gooder.
Brad -
Jailer: Next! Crucifixion?
Prisoner #1: Yes.
Jailer: Good. Out of the door. Line on the left. One cross each. Next! Crucifixion?
Prisoner #2: Ah, no. Freedom.
Jailer: What?
Prisoner #2: Eh, freedom for me. They said I hadn’t done anything, so I could go free and live on an island somewhere.
Jailer: Oh. Oh, well, that’s jolly good. Well, off you go, then.
Prisoner #2: Naah, I’m only pulling your leg. It’s crucifixion, really.
Congratulations!

A very cool giveaway for you today here on The Futurist, as we have some copies of the latest edition of the Monty Python classic, Life Of Brian.
This is being called the Immaculate Edition, and captures most of the features of the previous Criterion Collection (two commentary tracks, five deleted scenes, radio ads version), as well as a new hour long documentary.
All five surviving Pythons are interviewed and offer a lot of insight into the film, from its conception, to the controversy surrounding its opening (in the US and in the UK), to its lasting standing as the Pythons’ greatest work.
We have some copies to give away, and since all Python movies are very quoteable, leave your favorite Life Of Brian quote in the comments to qualify. We will choose a winner sometime next week, so keep your eyes on The Futurist to see if you have won!
And this weekend on WOXY.com, you can hear a brand new radio documentary featuring John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. The documentary will air several times throughout the weekend.
Enjoy the original 1979 trailer below…..

I’m not sure if you are familiar with the Langerado Festival or not, after all, in this day and age of what seems like too many festivals to keep up with, it can be tough. Langerado though is a very cool event that takes place in south Florida on the Big Cypress Indian Reservation, this year from March 6th-9th. This is the sixth year for Langerado, and from the looks of things, it is the strongest lineup yet.
Get a taste of some of the bands playing the festival….

I’m happy to announce our winners of the Aloha Lightworks EP today. I asked you guys to leave your favorite Aloha song in the comments and you did a great job. Here are our winners and their winning comments!

“if i lie down”… that organ gives me the feeling of being somewhere spiritual, maybe a church, during an eulogy “i hold this vision of you high” just seems to be about loss or unrealization of what could have been. “will i lose you, if i lie down?” its just so soulful to me, full of loss, perhaps regret. i lost my aunt last year and this is the closing song to my mix tribute to her.

Man, when I first heard “Brace Your Face”, I was astounded. A friend told me about Aloha, and I went out on a limb and bought “Some Echoes”. The composition, instrumentation and mix on “Brace Your Face” is just perfect. It’s so mysterious. But the best part of that song is even though it’s six and a half minutes long, that song is consistant the whole way through. It doesn’t feel long at all, or drag like some other longer tracks do.
Katherine
Between the Walls is the best by far.
Why? It’s a happy little song about imprisonment (self-evident in the title), anger management (the lyric “counting down from ten”), and the inherent futility of life (”one by one the days get done”).
Krist
I am partial to Roanoke born on the first EP. So good. So different from everything at the time.
Love it to this day.
