Brit Box Giveaway Winners!

We had a great response to our contest over the course of the last week for a great prize, The Brit Box. Over 50 people tossed britbox.jpgtheir name into the hat for the prize, but we have just one Brit Box to give away. Here is the comment from our winner Greg…..

The Stone Roses 1st album stands the test of time as one of the greatest start-to-finish albums ever. And, their second album ranks #1 as the worst follow-up record in relation to a great 1st album. For that feat alone they should go down into the annuls of rock history. The Cocteau Twins make me cry and I can’t even understand half of what they say–so it must be damn good! All the rest of them have a unique place in my heart as well, but I don’t have room to discuss them all. I summarize as follows: “If it’s not British, it’s crap!”.

Congrats Greg! But that is not all, five others will be receiving an email today letting you know you are the winners of the runner up prize, which is a 18 song compilation of some of the music from the Brit Box, which is a pretty nice little gift in itself……

Thanks for entering and get ready for yet another giveaway here very very soon!

The Brit Box Giveaway!

britbox1.jpg
Yet another great giveaway today here on The Futurist. This time it is for The Brit Box, an amazing compilation of British music that spans from 1984 to the present and features pretty much all of the British artists you might care about in that time period on the four discs.

Here are some highlights of the box set….

Disc 1, the first of THE BRIT BOX’s four chronologically ordered CDs, roughly spans 1984-1990. Seminal U.K. artists including The Smiths, Jesus & Mary Chain and The Stone Roses take timeless guitar-pop and freshly reinvent it, while groups including Happy Mondays and Primal Scream borrow gleefully from hip-hop to give birth to acid house.

Disc 2, spanning ‘90 to ‘93, explores bands that came to be known in the British press as “shoegazers,” acts that spent more time looking at their feet than making eye contact with their audiences. Featuring tracks by Ride, My Bloody Valentine, The Telescopes and others, the music courses through a sonic space comprised of introspective soundscapes, hazy guitars and dense production.

Disc 3
, focusing heavily on ‘94-’95, opens with Suede’s “Metal Mickey.” Throughout, the song sequence heralds the arrival of Brit-pop, and hugely popular bands including Oasis, Blur, Pulp, and Elastica.

Disc 4, THE BRIT BOX’s final CD, shows that even latecomers to the party like Ash, Super Furry Animals, Mansun, The Verve, and Placebo had some smashing songs in them.

To qualify for the box set, leave a comment with your favorite British band from the last 25 years or so and why. One lucky winner will get the Brit Box Set with the winner being announced next week. We will also choose 5 runner up winners that will receive a single cd that has 18 selections from the box set on it… Good Luck!

Check out some videos of some great Brit Box bands after the jump……

My So-Called Life Box Set Giveaway

When “My So-Called Life” premiered on ABC in the fall of 1994, I was a freshman at collegesocalled12.jpg and, shockingly, not watching much television. I had heard about the show, but didn’t catch it until I was home for the holidays that year and my younger sister urged me to watch it with her one night.

Looking back on the show now, it’s hard to believe that it ever made it to network television. None of the major broadcast networks cared about younger viewers at the time and they certainly didn’t know how to market to them. Executive Producers Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick had recently come off of the success of “thirtysomething”, which allowed them to bring this project to ABC and finally get it aired, even though the pilot was filmed a full year before it hit the airwaves in August of ‘94.

My So-Called Life” may not have pulled in record-breaking ratings, but in just 19 episodes it brought one of the most honest and heartfelt looks at American teenage life ever written into homes across the country. Even though it didn’t last, you have to give ABC credit for having the balls to let the show explore and confront themes including teenage alcoholism, homosexuality, and school violence in prime time.

Like many others, I didn’t really get a chance to see the entire series until it began to run nonstop on MTV. Looking back, you can see how a show like MSCL (for better or worse) tapped into the MTV audience much stronger than ABC’s and it changed the nature of programming on that channel forever.

This new 6-DVD box set collects all 19 episodes along with a wealth of bonus materials, including episode commentaries from members of the cast with creator and head writer Winnie Holzman. Winnie also sits down for a one-on-one interview with Claire Danes on the set’s bonus disc. Damn near every member of the cast also participates in the extra interviews and retrospectives that appear here…all of them except Jared Leto anyway (who is apparently too busy being a major douchebag to recognize that his career would be nowhere without his role as ‘Jordan Catalano!).

It’s also important to note that all of the original music that appeared in the show (which plays as a who’s-who of modern rock radio at the time) is intact on the dvd. That means you’ll hear from the likes of The Afghan Whigs, Juliana Hatfield, Sonic Youth, Buffalo Tom, The Lemonheads, Jawbox, and Bettie Serveert among others while revisiting the show.

Check out a great preview of the Box Set in this fan video…..

We’ve got FIVE copies of the MSCL box to giveaway this week thanks to our friends at Shout! Factory. You have until midnight on Sunday, November 25th to register and we’ll announce our winners on November 26th.

To enter, just send an e-mail to:

I’m Not There Soundtrack Winners!

dylan1.jpg
Wow, you guys really know your Dylan! This was a very very tough contest for us to choose the winners but in the end we had to pick just 4 of you who entered the contest to win the double CD of the “I’m Not There” soundtrack.

Enjoy the four winning comments while our winners prepare to enjoy their bounty……

Bianca -

Real tough question. I would say “Masters of war” because this song’s the perfect anti-militarist protest. Dylan can see through the masks of moral superiority, and shows them up(the ones who “build the big bombs”) for the cowardly, power-mongering, money-grabbing hypocrites they are. It’s so strong and powerful that I cant help feeling angry when I hear it.

Andy -

In all seriousness, “Cold Irons Bound” has been on my mental playlist ever since its release in 1997. I still have the ticket stub for my spot in line for the midnight release of Time Out Of Mind, and I don’t think my relationship with my college roommate will ever be the same for all the late nights I stomped along with that rhythm. The way that song builds and crescendos musically rips at you like upside down gravity. Your feet are in those irons, and all of a sudden your knees are all you’ve got. And then the lyrics start.

“Reality has always had too many heads.” There’s no way to parse this song. It’s no ballad or existential talking blues. It’s a proud rage at how distant he feels from life and love.

I’m Not There Soundtrack Giveaway!

imnotthere1.jpg

Over the past twenty years, Todd Haynes has perfected his own, often avant-guarde, brand of maverick filmmaking. He really made a name for himself in 1987 when he re-enacted the life & death of Karen Carpenter using Barbie dolls in a short film called “Superstar” that was ultimately pulled from distribution after a lawsuit by Richard Carpenter. The film projects that he has chosen to take on have been relatively few and far between when compared to some of his contemporaries, but you always know you are going to get something original when his latest film is unveiled.

There is a great deal of excitement for his new film “I’m Not There”, which has been receiving positive reviews since screening at the Telluride, Toronto and Venice Film Festivals earlier this year. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about “I’m Not There” is that it celebrates the life of Bob Dylan without being a traditional biopic.

Six actors, including Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, and Cate Blanchett (who won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for the role) represent various evolutions and persona’s from Dylan’s career without directly portraying him. The narrative is inspired more by his songwriting than by his actual life and, as such, will probably confound as many viewers as it delights.

The film opens in limited release on November 21st and will continue to expand across the country towards the holidays.

The 2-cd soundtrack assembled for the project is just as ambitious as the film itself. Over 30 Dylan songs are covered by a veritable who’s who of indie rock. It’s one of the few places you’ll find Sonic Youth, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, The Black Keys, Stephen Malkmus, Antony & The Johnsons, Sufjan Stevens, Calexico, Willie Nelson, Karen O, and Jeff Tweedy rubbing elbows
outside of Coachella or Austin City Limits festival lineup.

We have 4 copies of this 2-cd collection to give away to some lucky Futurist readers. All you have to do is leave a comment before Friday, November 9th telling us about your favorite Dylan song and why. We’ll select 4 winners from all the entries received!

Stream Music from the Soundtrack from the official site or Myspace.

The Go! Team Proof Of Youth CD Winners!

Time to announce the winners of our Go! Team Proof Of Youth CD Giveaway. Here are our 5 winners, with their winning comments as well. Congratulations to our winners, and stick around because another giveaway is just around the corner…..

Harriet -

“Junior Kickstart” is my personal theme song and I spread the gospel of The Go! Team on every mix CD I make for friends. I sadly missed their show at the Double Door in Chicago last weekend because of prior travel plans, so I would love to have the chance to submerge myself in the gloriously retro, unpredictable, and wholly invigorating sounds of their newest album.

Brendan -

Whenever I’m at work, half-heartedly crunching away at some boring project I’d rather not being doing, and I hear “Flashlight Fight” come on, my mind is magically transported away to a world of old kung-fu movies that somehow involve Chuck D backed up by a crazy 80s-tracksuit clad street-crew of assorted b-boys, bombers, and other hip-hop stereotypes, while a plethora of samurai and cyborg ninjas do battle all around. This is a MUCH better place to be than the boring office, and if I had the CD, I could choose when I got to be whisked away to this wonderful land of beats, ninja fights and other badassness.

Dan -

I work in radio. It’s a station in a small market where they never send us cool CDs. And as you know, being in radio pretty much means I’m broke. So getting a free CD would be really sweet. Plus nobody ever gives me anything which is really sending me into a downward spiral of introspection, and the world doesn’t really need more of that. Begging, guilt, I’ve got it goin’ on.

Matt-

I live in a Des Moines suburb where there are no decent record stores, the only place to even start to find some indie CD’s is at Half Price Books, and who knows where those people found those CD’s. There is no way that there is a Double Disc version of Proof Of Youth in this city.

Annie -

I just saw the Go! Team at Double Door in Chicago last Saturday night! Fantastic show and I’m still reeling from it. I first heard the band on WOXY.com… I listen all day, every day at work and every once in a while a great song will catch my attention and I will check the playlist to see who’s piqued my interest… every Go! Team song has done that for me. I don’t have the album because I’m on a tight, tight budget, but now that I’ve seen them live, I want to listen non-stop. Please award me the new album… plllleeeeeaaaaaaase!!! :)

Congratulations to all our winners!

Monolith Hangover Winners!

A big thanks to everyone who left all the great hangover tips in our post about having hangover.jpgMonolith Hangover last week. Not only were they helpful but it sorta made us want to go out and get trashed with the promise of no hangovers thanks to all the advice from everyone. We do have to choose just two though as winners of the new CD from Editors - An End Has A Start. And here they are….along with the prescribed cure of course.

Crystal provides a very medical sounding cure, but I buy it…..

Hangover Cure That Works…

Sleep in (a cool climate is best, but not always available as in you are camping).

When you get up:

B-12 500 mcg

Folic Acid 400 - 800 mcg

1 - 2 Mucinex D tablets (have to sign for them in Ohio)

1 - 2 Bufferin or Ibuprofin tablets

Water or Iced Tea - Don’t suck down a whole bunch at once; sip slowly but often

You’ll be ready for the new day’s first beer before you know it !

And I like how Greg puts alot of thought into his explanation, lots of good thoughts here as well….

Not necessarily in this order;
1. Lots of water (preferably before you go to bed but also the day after).
2. Some greasy sustenance (some the night before doesn’t hurt either (assuming you kept it down)).
3. High dosage of your preferred pain reliever at the prescribed intervals until cured.
4. Get rid of whomever is around (whether a temporary guest from the night before or someone more permanent). For a little while you are going to be a sniveling, disgusting, and shameful wreck that no one will want to see with an acute distaste for everything and everyone–so clear the area.
4. Long hot, steamy shower (as soon as you are able to get up walk without plummeting back to the floor).
5. Moan.
6. Groan.
7. Some woxy vintage (on a very low volume!). (You can exchange this for some bad cable TV or PBS documentary if desired).
8. Swear you will never drink that much again (this step is often debated regarding its effectiveness, but inevitably is always called upon by the victim, so just assume it will be part of the recovery process).
9. Call your friends as you begin to feel better to see when the next party is starting?
10. Repeat.

Thanks everyone!
