Afghan Whigs Unbreakable Winners!

whigs1.jpg
Wow, you guys really love your Whigs! We had no less than 20 entries for this contest, and it made the choices very difficult, but here are our four winners and the comments they submitted.

JVK

“Uptown Avondale, simply for the track “The Rebirth of Cool.” Granted, I learned the official album name well after hearing the song. There was a time before I knew who the Afghan Whigs were, and was just a 20-something simpleton listening to the FM dial (tuned into 97.7, I believe) and loved, no wait.. lived for when “that song” was spun on the airwaves.

I pretty much consider that song a part of WOXY’s DNA and cannot hear it without thinking of this station, then and now. For that reason, I nominate Uptown Avondale.”

Mike

“When I moved to cincy in ‘95-96 to go to UC, Black Love was just coming out — it was my intro to the Whigs courtesy (believe it or not) of WEBN. Saw them at bogart’s right before I went back home for the summer and pretty much went crazy for the band right then and there. Went home for the summer and annoyed the crap out of DJs at the station there requesting me some Whigs.”

Brad

“Gentlemen”’s my fave, by far. The recurring themes, Dulli at his most lecherous, fantastic production, and a guest vocal by the amazing Marcy Mays. Can’t beat it.”

Jonathon

“1965, no contest. This album forever renders me nostalgic for the not so distant past- the kind of nostalgia that can be brandished as a weapon. Each song is directly linked to past nights out, and “Somethn’ Hot” will always lead off my essential “going-out to booze up and riot” compilation.”

All of the winners have been emailed to claim their prize. Thanks for all the great comments everyone!

And enjoy this old Whigs video for Gentlemen….
