Hey everyone, hope you are enjoying New Tunes Tuesday so far. Here are a couple free and legal mp3’s from some of the bands you are hearing today on New Tunes Tuesday, along with some mp3’s from bands we are playing on Nothing But New. Don’t forget Nothing But New airs every Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm ET!
All the way back in 2001, Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear had no idea that he would become a member of the band. He had no idea that he would be a core member of one of the up and coming musical acts in the US, that he would be opening a string of dates for Radiohead or playing on the late night talk show circuit. What he did know is that he would be making music with his friend and NYU roommate, Fred Nicolaus.
Daniel and Fred’s early collaborations consisted of a couple 7″ released put out by southern California indie Isota Records, which also released their debut full length album, The Whitey On The Moon (which was also the band name at the time) in 2003. Not long after that release, Daniel began to play full time with the Grizzly Bear boys and suddenly had little to no time for his project with Fred as the Bears became a nearly overnight success.
However, always lurking in the background was the music he innocently crafted with Fred back at NYU and the desire to return to that landscape never went away. The Whitey On The Moon album had been re-issued in the UK and was a critical hit, which prompted the duo to get back together for a new album. And during breaks from Grizzly Bear activities, Daniel and Fred began to fine tune the new album, which in parts had been written as far back as their friendships beginnings, and chose a new name as well, Department Of Eagles, which is a reference to artist Marcel Broodthaers’ Institutional Critique.
The result is a beautifully crafted folk/ pop record titled In Ear Park. Daniel and Fred combine 60’s pop melodies and vocal styles with a delicate layer of folk instrumentation to make this album really soar. (excuse the soaring eagles pun) Some songs will sound like they belong on a Grizzly Bear album, as this record does not stray too far from the music Daniel creates with his “other” band, but the lyrics are of a much more personal nature. Daniel has said that the album as a whole is in memory of his father, who passed away last year. The album’s title is the fictional name of a park and Daniel and his Dad would regularly spend time walking through. And you can feel the nostalgia throughout the album, which Daniel also said had a tone and emphasis that was too personal for a Grizzly Bear album.
So while fans of Grizzly Bear will certainly find a lot to love on In Ear Park, the personal touch that Daniel and Fred have placed on this new Department of Eagles record is bound to gather others as well.
It’s been over 2 years since French Kicks dropped by the station. Shortly after Shiv declared Swimming one of his favorite albums of the year, he started pestering their manager for a Cincinnati area stop so we could get them back into our studios.
In this session, the band joins Joe in the Lounge to play a few cuts from their 4th full-length album. In the interview they talk about producing this cd themselves and the freedom of capturing most of its songs live in one or two takes with minimal overdubbing.

Love In The Ruins
Hey WOXY friends in Indianapolis, we have a concert with your name written all over it. The show is tomorrow night in Indy, and features some great bands. As you can see with the image on the right hand side, The Coke Dares, The Turnbull AC’s and Sybris are all performing tomorrow night at Birdy’s in Indianapolis and WOXY.com is thrilled to be a part of this show.
The guys from Turnbull AC’s are local favorites of ours, and made a trip into our lounge a couple summers back, be sure to download that set below. And we have been really impressed by the latest album from Sybris, their 2nd long player, Into The Trees.
So come on out and enjoy three midwestern bands in The Coke Dares (Bloomington, IN), Turnbull AC’s (Cincinnnati, OH) and Sybris (Chicago, IL).
One day of MidPoint is in the books, and Friday is ready to kick off. Last night was great at the WOXY.com stage with sets from The Chocolate Horse, Daniel Martin Moore and Why? Tonight we rev it up even more, sporting 4 great acts on the WOXY.com stage at the Aronoff Center.
Rosehips - 8pm
Friday kicks off with the all female rock from Rosehips. The band released a great debut record earlier this year that we featured on Local Lixx and really grew on all of us here at the station. They bring to mind early Rainer Maria or Sleater Kinney, but certainly put their own stamp on everything I have heard from them. A great way to kick off your Friday at MidPoint.
The Purrs - 9pm
Seattle 4-piece are back in Cincinnati for MidPoint and are worth your attention tonight. We have been big fans and supporters of The Purrs for years now and are really excited they will be back in Cincinnati tonight on the WOXY.com stage. We were fortunate enough to host them in the lounge back in October of 2006, have a listen to that set below, and be sure to check them out tonight at 9pm!
Say Hi - 10pm
Eric Elbogen is Say Hi, and another Seattle musician taking the WOXY.com stage on Friday night. Eric and his musical project Say Hi released an excellent record earlier this year (his 5th), The Wishes And The Glitch and we had him in for his 3rd Lounge session back in February, which you can grab some songs from below. Be sure to catch what promises to be a great set from Say Hi….
Jukebox The Ghost - 11pm This energetic trio will be closing out the night on the WOXY.com stage off the strength of their debut album, released earlier this year, Let Live & Let Ghosts. The piano pop of JTG has quickly become a favorite of ours this year and we had them in for a session back in January (mp3 below) had them on our Monolith stage earlier this month, and oh yeah, will be hosting them in the Lounge this afternoon at 4pm ET as well!
It’s here! The Midpoint Music Festival kicks off tonight here in Cincinnati, and so do the performances on the WOXY.com stage at the Aronoff Theatre! Here is a preview of tonight’s acts playing our stage along with some free music attached to get you started….
The Chocolate Horse - 9pm
The festivities kick off tonight as our friends from The Chocolate Horse take the stage at 9pm. The Chocolate Horse actually began a few years ago as a side project for some of the guys in Readymaid, but it has been in the last year that they’ve really made a name for themselves here in town.
Their debut record Patience Works! was released last fall and ended up being nominated for Album Of The Year at the 2007 CEA’s. Enjoy this song they performed live in our lounge this March.
“Recorded in Los Angeles with acclaimed producer Joe Chiccarelli (who has previously worked with The White Stripes, The Shins, and U2), every song here is an absolute treasure. It is exciting to have such a stunning debut album surface so unexpectedly from right here in our own backyard.”
Moore is still a bit of a secret, even locally, so come out to this set and support another great local musician!
Why? - 11pm
Why? hail from Oakland, California, but have strong Cincinnati roots and will be returning home to headline our stage on the first night. The band released an excellent album earlier this year called Alopecia and have been on the road supporting it every since. Expect a wide array of genres and sounds to be present for this entertaining set, and be sure to snag a free download from Alopecia below as well.
A lot has happened since we first had the guys from Arizona step into our studios last year. The guys have relocated to North Carolina, done loads of tour dates, and recorded a brand new full length album, their second, for Echo Mountain Records. The follow up to their great debut record, Glowing Bird, is coming out October 14th, but we have a couple songs to play for you today on WOXY.com from the new album.
So be sure to listen for new music from Arizona today as a part of our New Tunes Tuesday, and in addition to that, enjoy this mp3 from the new album as a free download right now!
Our friends from the band Winterpills have joined us at WOXY.com for two sessions in the past couple years, first at SXSW in 2007 and then in the Cincinnati studios earlier this year. When they were with us in Cincy, they previewed several new songs from their upcoming album, Central Chambers.
The new record is slated for release on October 14th, and we are previewing some of the album cuts today on New Tunes Tuesday. So be sure to listen in today and catch some new music from Winterpills, and in the meantime feel free to snag some of these free downloads from their most recent Lounge act session which also happen to be on the new album.
Well, it has been about a month since we hosted our last band in the lounge, and we are about to make up for it in a big way. Today we kick off a week that will see us host two bands in the lounge, starting today with French Kicks. We really love the latest French Kicks record, Swimming, and it will be a real treat to have them back into the lounge with us today.
And then later in the week, to prepare for the Midpoint Music Festival here in Cincinnati, we will be hosting a return performance from our friends in Jukebox The Ghost, who will also be playing our stage at Midpoint this weekend.
So set those calendars for French Kicks today at 2:30 ET and Jukebox The Ghost this Friday at 4 ET live in the Lounge on WOXY.com.
