Welcome to the first installment of “This Just In” where a WOXY.com DJ gives thoughts on a new record that has recently been added to the playlist. Today, Joe takes a stab at the new album from Horse Feathers, House With No Home.
When it comes to mostly acoustic based, sometimes quiet singer songwriter types, I am, admittedly, quite the fan. So it should not come as a big surprise that I am totally bowled over by Horse Feathers. The Portland based trio are preparing to release their second full length album, House With No Home, on Kill Rock Stars and I can honestly tell you that this has become my morning album of choice during the past month or so.
There is something almost sacred about good morning music for me. It has to be gentle enough for me to ease in, but not so sleepy and I stay in my morning coma. Horse Feathers achieves both of those and more on this new album. Combining the hushed tones of early Iron & Wine with vocals and the backing strings you might find on a Bonnie Prince Billy album, Horse Feathers have created a soothing yet complex piece of art. And to be quite honest, the more I listen to songs like “Rude To Rile” & “Heathen’s Kiss,” the less I think this is just a morning album, and the more I think it is suitable for just about any part of the day.
So, if you have ever called yourself a fan of Sam Beam, Will Oldham, M. Ward, John Fahey, or Bon Iver, this is required listening. House With No Home drops on Septemeber 9th from KRS, but you can listen to a song below right now.
Sorry for the late notice, but there is a really great show tomorrow night in the Windy City that you need to be aware of. WOXY.com is proud to welcome three great bands to the stage at Schuba’s Tavern in Chicago tomorrow night, all of which have been into our lounge in the past.
Thao Nguyen claims to be lazy but you’d never know it by listening to We Brave Bee Stings And All. In her WOXY Lounge debut, she’s backed by The Get Down Stay Down for a set that includes 5 cuts off the new cd.
We caught the band just two days after beginning their first headlining tour. Not only will you hear some great music, but there is a strong defense of the Lilith Fair and tales of extreme weiners in Columbus, Ohio (those stories are not related, we promise).

A lot has happened to The Young Republic in the last year. After graduating from college, the band decided to relocate from Boston to Nashville. They lost a few members in the process, but the streamlined lineup has since been signed to a UK indie label and released a cd across the pond.
With a new home studio in place, the band have been focusing on new material. In this session, they let us hear a little bit of what they’re working on.

Thao & The Get Down Stay down made a recent appearance in our lounge and played a great set of music from her album, We Brave Bee Stings And All. Soft City Lights was in attendence and put together yet another great video for one of the songs, “Beat (Health, Life, and Fire).” Enjoy it below, along with a full download of the performance!
Last week for Local Lixx, we had a guest in studio picking our playlist of great local tunes. Kyle Melton of The Buddah Den joined me for a full hour of Local Lixx and played music from some of his favorite bands from Dayton, OH. Kyle and Joe discuss the current state of music in Dayton, along with some Dayton nostalgia as well.
Our friends from Mason Proper have just announced that they have their sophomore album in the can and almost ready for public consumption. The record is called Olly Oxen Free and was co-produced by the band and Chris Coady (TV on The Radio, Blonde Redhead).
The band was in our lounge last winter (January 2008) and played a bunch of new material that we hope makes its way onto the new album. I have yet to see a tracklisting, but please do enjoy this new material from that session and get ready for Olly Oxen Free on September 24th from Dovecote Records!
Last year for the inaugural Monolith Festival we gave a lucky winner and a guest a great prize package that not only got you in front of some incredible bands at an incredible venue (Red Rocks), but also got you there thanks to our friends at Southwest Airlines. Well, you have another chance to be a winner this year as well.
That’s right, WOXY.com is flying one lucky winner and their guest out to Red Rocks Amphitheater for the Monolith Festival on September 13th & 14th. Not only that, we’ll also hook you up with VIP passes to the festival. Airfare again graciously provided by Southwest Airlines.
This year to win, you have to first register, and then listen.
Now through August 8th, you can register by sending an email to woxycontests at gmail dot com with Monolith Flyaway in the subject line (also please include your name and address in the email). One entry per household please. Then, starting August 11th, we’ll call out a registrant’s name on the air sometime between Noon and 5pm ET, and if it’s you, you’ll have 10 minutes to call us here at WOXY.com to claim your spot in the grand prize drawing.
If you don’t call, we’ll move on to another name until someone claims their spot in the drawing. We’ll only qualify one person a day, Monday through Friday, for two weeks. So when we draw a winner on August 22nd at 5pm, there will be just 10 listeners eligible for the Grand Prize.
Got it? Good. So take the first step right now and send an email to woxycontests at gmail dot com with Monolith Flyaway in the subject line!
In the meantime, enjoy some WOXY.com Lounge sessions from bands playing this years Monolith festival….
Join me tonight at 8pm ET for a special edition of Local Lixx on WOXY.com. This evening Kyle Melton of the music blog Buddah Den out of Dayton joins me in studio for an hour long version of Local Lixx. Kyle has chosen some of his favorite stuff from the Dayton scene and the two of us will be playing the songs and chatting about them from 8-9ET.
And if you missed last week’s episode, you can download it right now below, full tracklisting and previous episodes can be had right here as well.
We got to know this Chicago band about two years ago when they were still known as What Four. A submission to our Unsigned specialty show at the time earned them a fair amount of WOXY airplay.
Now, they’ve officially changed their name, added a cellist, and had their full-length album Sylvia mixed by Grammy-winning producer Ed Stassium.
With a strong classical influence and a rock edge that should appeal to fans of Muse, this performance starts off with the first tune we ever heard from the band and then goes on to include several cuts from their new album.
