I’m standing between two members of Tottenham’s Hall of Fame, Martin Chivers (L) and Martin Peters. Peters scored a goal in England’s 1966 World Cup final game.
You don’t have to tell me that it’s a long way from WOXY’s first home underneath a fast food restaurant in Oxford, Ohio to White Hart Lane in London, England, home to soccer’s Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League. Still, that’s where my wife Jennifer and I were during a trip to the UK we took over the Holidays. We did more than just attend a game, though, I represented WOXY.com as the match ball sponsor in Tottenham’s December 29th contest against Reading. So just how did WOXY.com get in front of over 35,000 English soccer fans?

(L-R) Mick Scholefield, Dave Cooper, me, Jennifer Taylor, Chris Ryan, Andy Currell, Phillip Ryan, and Chris Cooper.
Well, it’s all thanks to our friend and rabid WOXY supporter, Mick Scholefield, director of Trak Image Music in London. Jennifer and I booked this holiday trip last spring and a few months ago, Mick & I strayed from our usual e-mail discussion about music long enough to discover that we were both Spurs fans. We then talked about catching a match, and it turned out to be the highlight of our trip.
Through his initiative, he arranged for WOXY.com to sponsor the match ball. Not only was our logo displayed on the front of the program, we were able to place an ad inside, and yours truly came back with a signed ball from the team to add to WOXY’s trophy cabinet. Actually, we don’t have such a thing but maybe now we’ve got a reason to get one! The hospitality was world class, the game a thrilling 6-4 Tottenham victory, and we got to spend the entire day with Mick and several other new friends. We couldn’t have had a better time.

me receiving the match ball from Tottenham First Team coach Gus Poyet.
He asserted that “maybe this will bring in some more listeners from the UK”. So, perhaps the next time you hear us acknowledge a request from London, it may be from someone who was in attendance that day. It sure helps to underscore the fact that lovers of great music are everywhere and “WOXY.com - Worldwide” is more than just a slogan.

It has been way too long since we did an Inside The Studio post here on The Futurist. As you probably know by now, when a band comes by for a lounge performance, they sign huge boards that are in the studio. For the entire year of 2007, and a chunk of 2006 also, they have been signing a large piece of dryway actually, and it is really full at this point. Actually, if anyone wants to tote a piece of drywall to our studio, we could really use a new piece, seriously.
Anyway, here are some photos of the most recent sigs. Click on the thumbnail to see the photos full size.

The Big Sleep, Coyote Bones etc.

Ben Kweller

Yo La Tengo

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin Pays tribute to the 1990 World Series Champions.

Frank Black does a double marker signature, he said his new band name was “Shwarma”, and wrote that also.

Bad Veins make their presence known.

Lots of good ones here, see what you can find.

More goodies in this photo.
Check out our previous Inside The Studio posts here.

It has been quite a year in the lounge at WOXY.com. While I still have a couple sessions from last week to properly recap here on The Futurist, I thought you might enjoy this slideshow with some of our best and favorite photos of 2007. Our camera was used alot this year, and by a pretty wide array of photogs.
Our sound engineer Brian Niesz did the bulk of the work for lounge sessions, with myself and even Mike and Shiv filling in when needed. And at festivals, Bryan Jay did alot of photo work at CMJ, Monolith, and SXSW, while he and myself shared photo duties at Bonnaroo. Whew, anyway, its a big set (almost 200 photos), but do enjoy.
And if you are not a slideshow person, you can check all of our sets out at Flickr……

Get ready for a barrage of CMJ related content here on The Futurist over the course of the next week or so. First up is just some of the excellent photos Bryan and Shivvy snapped during their week at the Gothamist house. Check out the slideshow for the first day below. Or if you would prefer, head over to Flickr to view em at your own speed.

Our first day at Monolith was a blast, but we were wiped out by the end of it. After getting a good night’s sleep and a quick breakfast, we headed back to Red Rocks on Saturday morning ready to get the second day going.
We hadn’t seen Via Audio since they dropped in to EAR Studios with us down in Austin at SXSW earlier in the year. Since that time, the band signed with the SideCho label and were getting ready to release their debut full-length record Say Something Say Something Say Something.

It can be daunting to be the first band to take the stage, but as soon as the band launched into their set, people started to pour into the room to check them out. I can guarantee that they walked away from the afternoon with some new fans.
They were really fun to watch on stage with loads of energy. There was a magic moment during their performance that just blew me away. That happened when they broke into “Enunciation” from their new album. It’s a nice jazzy number that really highlights the range of Jessica’s voice. You can download that song below, along with some other great moments from the band’s Monolith set.
