It is always nice to get some kudos. And it’s really nice to get kudos from a respected entertainment magazine like Entertainment Weekly. I am unsure if this will or has made a print copy of EW, but if you follow this link you will see that they have listed WOXY.com as one of their Top 100 websites.

Also very cool that EW listed two local Cincinnati bands in their brief description. Bad Veins and The Lions Rampant…..

Just like 2006, WOXY.com has been nominated for a Plug Award! Last year we proudly took home two Plug Awards for Best Podcast and Online Radio Station Of The Year. It looks like the category for best podcast has gone by the wayside but WOXY.com gets a nod again this year for Online Radio Station Of The Year.

So help us to repeat at this years awards by voting over at the Plug website.

If you pick up the May issue of Cincinnati Magazine, you will find a nice little photo spread about WOXY.com. Our friend Jon Willis was in studio awhile back and took some shots that ended up being the May photo feature! So, if you are in the Cincinnati area, get out and grab a copy of the latest issue. Here are two pages scanned in from the magazine.

Our very own Matt Shiv was recently interviewed by the blog, “People With Animal Heads“. Shiv talked about the WOXY play list, local bands, and also gives advice to bands looking to send their music to the station. Here are a few quotes from the piece I want to highlight….

On local / regional music making its way onto the play list…..

“When WOXY was a local FM broadcast, we really went out of the way to spotlight the local music community. Once we went internet-only in 2004, we had to refocus our efforts a bit. Just because you are a band in Cincinnati or Dayton, that doesn’t automatically earn you airplay on the station these days. The music submitted by local artists is held up to the same standards as any submission from around the world. If we like it, we support it,” Shiv said. “Mike, Joe, and I are all from this area, so even without noticing that we have a fondness for Midwestern bands and artists, I think that sometimes that just shines through. In addition to the tri-state, we’ve really supported a lot of bands from Chicago, Detroit, Columbus, Cleveland and Nashville.”

Tips for bands submitting music.

“The main suggestion that I can make to anybody trying to pursue radio airplay is to have quality product and submit it professionally. At WOXY.com, we’ve got a staff of three people and get hundreds of cd submissions a week. I can’t even keep up with everything that comes in the door, never mind people e-mailing me asking me to follow 500 links to listen to their music online. Our attitude has always been, if you want me to hear your music, you’ll get it into my hands,”

On how WOXY has helped young bands.

“I know that we have a lot of A&R people from record labels who pay attention to the bands that we playlist who are unsigned. We get e-mails from them often asking us for more details on a certain band or they’ll approach us after a Lounge Act performance airs asking for contact info. All we do is play the music that we feel strongly about, but I am always thrilled when that translates into more exposure or a label signing for a band,”

Much has been said in the past couple months regarding the Internet Radio Royalty decision that was announced and how it could affect WOXY.com. We have been sought out by some media outlets as a result and I wanted to highlight two of those today here on The Futurist.

The Digital Savant himself, Bryan Jay did an interview with the Dayton Daily News recently. You can find the article here.

“We do think artists should be compensated for their work,” said Miller, a Dayton native. “But you could go from collecting some royalties now to collecting no royalties, because you just killed off the whole industry.”

And this from a Wall Street Journal article from last month gives a more in-depth look. You will need to login to view the entire article, but I have some quotes below.

“The annual cost of running WOXY could more than double to around $2 million, far exceeding the station’s $500,000 to $1 million in annual revenue. The board’s decision could still be appealed or rescinded by Congress, but WOXY manager Bryan Jay Miller says, “I don’t see the situation getting any better.”

“Sue Busch, head of radio promotions at Seattle’s Sub Pop Records, says most radio executives she knows rarely play new, independent music, relying on business consultants to tell them which songs are likely to be most popular. The WOXY DJs, she says, play songs they enjoy themselves.”

If you pick up the latest copy of Esquire Magazine, the one with Hilary Swank on the cover (pic on the right), you can catch a nice little blurb about WOXY. It’s true, Esquire has dubbed “The Future of Rock N Roll” as the Best Online Radio Station as a part of their 2007 ESKY Awards! Check out the scan from the issue of Esquire. Of course, they do still think we are based in Oxford, but who cares. I’m wondering if this means Hilary Swank will be stopping by the studio? On a side note, we also endorse the Esquire article aptly titled, “Why Are Singers Such Pussies?”, which can be found in the same issue, and also if you follow this link.
